Communications Intern

Are you looking for an internship where you can make a difference? Join our team at xMinds! We're a nonprofit organization in Montgomery, County, MD, devoted to improving education for autistic students. 

We are looking for a high school student in Montgomery County to help us maintain and expand our website resources and tailor our communications with the local autism community. Autistic students are encouraged to apply.

Hours and Compensation

  • Approximately 2-3 hours per week.  All work will be virtual, and you can choose your hours around your schedule. Weekly check-ins with the executive director or an xMinds board member will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time.
  • The internship will run from early February 2021 until the end of May 2022.
  • Interns under 16 years old will earn SSL hours; interns 16 or older will have a choice of SSL hours or a stipend. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Creating event flyers to promote our speaker presentations, which inform educators and families of autistic students.
  • Other possible responsibilities include tailoring email distribution lists and developing Excel spreadsheets. We'll work with the intern to find projects of interest.

Skills and Traits We're Looking For

  • Good communications skills. Would you like to hone your communication skills? Then this is the perfect internship!
  • An attention to detail. Our members will depend on you for accurate information about upcoming events.
  • A creative flair. You'll put your creativity to use designing event flyers.
    • A love of learning. We'll give you an inside look at what it takes to run a nonprofit organization. If you are familiar with Canva, Excel or Wild Apricot that's great. If not, we'll train you. It will be an opportunity to learn to (1) post events to an online calendar, (2) edit webpages on the Wild Apricot website platform, (3) design flyers using Canva, and (4) create spreadsheets using Excel.  
    • An interest in autism. An interest and familiarity with autism and the xMinds mission is preferred. Autistic students are encouraged to apply.
