xMindsWire September 2024

It’s Back to School Time

CLEAR OUT THE SUMMER COBWEBS

The kids are back to school and getting settled in new classrooms, perhaps even new schools. Now’s the best time to reacquaint yourself (and your child) with their IEP, including the ever-important accommodations, since the annual review last spring feels like eons ago.

Here are some important things to keep in mind:

 – Accommodations: You should make sure the IEP team (especially in a new school) is aware of past accommodations and support aids/services and request changes. xMinds provides a popular and in-depth web page, "What are accommodations?". It may be helpful to print out the list of your child's accommodations to share with school staff.

If you’re not familiar, accommodations are available to any student who has an IEP or a 504 plan. Specifically, accommodations can assist with sensory processing, behavioral supports, comprehension, reading and written expression, executive functioning (attention, organization, work/study skills), social interaction, and emotional and self-regulation. To see examples of accommodations that have been helpful to autistic students, click here

 – Placements: If you’re thinking ahead or need to make a change in the middle of the school year, the xMinds website also features a newly updated page on MCPS Placements, including detailed maps of special education locations offering autism services.

Guidance and Support: For parents who are new to MCPS or who need guidance or support in implementing an IEP with a new school team, xMinds has a trained group of parent advocates who are supervised by a professional special education consultant offering its expertise

The process is easy: Just complete our short intake form for an xMinds team consult, and a volunteer advocate will reach out to you. After that conversation, our team will pool their collective knowledge and provide you with advice. Note: these volunteers do not provide legal advice and will not accompany you to IEP meetings.

Election Season is Heating Up

LEARN WHAT LOCAL CANDIDATES SAY ABOUT AUTISM

It is election season and while many are focused on national and state politics, here in Montgomery County, we will be voting for new Board of Education (BOE) representatives who will be making important decisions impacting special education.

xMinds and the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM) sent a questionnaire to BOE candidates to get their views on areas ranging from support for discrete autism-specific programs, to budget prioritization, to equity and access.

Here are a couple of sample questions: “Given the increasing number of students requiring special education services, how will you prioritize special education budget requests to the County Council, particularly in years when the council may not fully fund the budget?” “What steps will you take, including changes to policies and regulations, to ensure that MCPS staff involve the community before making decisions that affect critical special education programs?”

We hope the candidates’ answers to these questions will help the autistic community select candidates who support our priorities. Look for the results in the October xMindsWire.

In the meantime, several local organizations will host candidate forums in the next few weeks, either virtually or in-person:

– Thursday, September 19 Moderately MoCo BOE Candidate Debate

– Wednesday, October 9 League of Women Voters MoCo BOE candidate forum. Find more information about this event HERE

While you’re at it, now’s the perfect time to check your voter registration. There are deadlines coming up for requesting a paper/absentee ballot.

Tribute to Steve Silberman

NEUROTRIBES AUTHOR DIED AUGUST 28

The autism community is mourning the passing of Steve Silberman, whose 2015 book Neurotribes many parents have read and treasured as they move through the stages of diagnosis. The book, which won multiple awards including the Samuel Johnson Prize for Nonfiction and the California Book Award, champions neurodiversity and argues for treating autistic people with compassion and understanding.

Silberman was a passionate advocate for the neurodiverse. In his 2016 TED presentation, he challenged society’s conceits about acceptance: “Inclusion does not mean simply inviting people with disabilities into our workplaces, classrooms and communities as a compassionate gesture. It’s about ensuring that every member of our society is given the greatest chance for success. When people with developmental disabilities have what they need to thrive, everyone benefits.”

Steve Silberman

1957 - 2024

In this 2017 interview with Steve in The Sun magazine, he expands on Neurotribes’ argument that disability is a two-way street. “When we say people are ‘disabled,’ we’re saying they have challenges and limitations, but we’re also describing our society’s failure to meet their needs,” he noted.

A colorful character, Silberman was friends with such popular culture icons as David Crosby and Allen Ginsberg and was active on social media, even until his last days. May he rest easy and may his memory be a blessing.

Bike to the Beach 2024 in Rearview Mirror

MORE THAN 350 RIDERS PARTICIPATED

Congratulations to Team xMinds for raising over $53,000 for xMinds through the Bike to the Beach (B2B) fundraiser. Team members biked up to 100 miles in the heat to Dewey Beach, Del., during the August 2 fundraising ride. xMinds uses these funds to offer programs and events for MoCo families with autistic kids, develop online resources to help families support their autistic students, award educator grants to purchase classroom supplies, and more.

Our B2B riders felt lots of support, with special thanks to the extraordinary team at the xMinds rest stop cheering them on and helping them through the finish line!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported Team xMinds on this journey  — you are making a difference in the lives of autistic students and their families. We appreciate your donations, your volunteerism, and your pedal power!

And a special thanks to our Gold Sponsors: Center for Assessment and Treatment and Guiding Exceptional Parents, and Silver Sponsors: Starobin Counseling, LLC; Educational Resources Group of Greater Washington, Casey's Special Education Services, LLC, and Weinfeld Education Group

And there is still time to donate
