Finding Ourselves In Books

CELEBRATING AUTISM REPRESENTATION IN SALLY J. PLA'S ROWAN + GEMMA

Seeing yourself in a book changes everything. When neurodivergent kids read stories with authentic representation, they finally get to see their own communication styles, inner worlds, and daily experiences on the page.

In her newest novel, Rowan + Gemma, award-winning author Sally J. Pla does just that. She brings us a rich, thoughtful story that centers a nonspeaking character alongside a sweet, tender look at young neurodivergent love. It’s the kind of book our community has been waiting for!

We have an extraordinary opportunity for our community: meet Sally J. Pla in person! As part of her national book tour, xMinds is hosting this special event on the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 15 in Rockville – her only stop in Montgomery County. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear directly from the celebrated children’s author as she shares her inspiring work and personal journey.

The novel officially launches on October 20, and we strongly encourage families to pick up a copy ahead of time to dive into this story together! We’ve made arrangements with Politics & Prose to sell Rowan + Gemma along with several of Sally’s other popular novels right at the event. If you would like to pick up your copy in advance, you can order directly through Politics & Prose.

Don’t Wait to Register!

Thanks to generous sponsors including Abilis Autism in Action, we have a stash of Sally’s books to give away! We will be giving out free books every week leading up to the event for those who sign up early, as well as offering door prizes for attendees on event day. But remember – you have to attend in person to claim your prize, so don’t miss this fun weekend event.

Monthly Art Series

EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE SIDE

Bring your autistic tween or teen for three fun afternoons of hands-on creativity and imagination! During the xMinds Creative Space Workshop Series, participants will bring their own unique character to life through drawing, sculpting, and storytelling.

This series takes place over three Saturdays this fall, with each session building on the last – so please plan to attend all three!

Dates & Times: Three Saturday sessions:

Session 1 ( Oct. 24, 2-3:30 p.m.): Each participant will receive a sketchbook that we will use throughout the series. We will learn the basics of creating a character and begin sketching our ideas. We will brainstorm who our character is and learn how to draw them in different positions.

Session 2 (Nov. 21, 2-3:30 p.m.): Using our illustrations from week 1, we will learn how to create a 3D version of our characters using Model Magic (a soft, clean, air-dry clay).

Session 3 (Dec. 12, 3-4:30 p.m.): We will develop a story about our character and learn to create a short comic.

Location: Long Branch Library (2nd floor meeting room), 8800 Garland Ave., Silver Spring, MD, 20901

Age requirement: Students in Grades 6–12 (Ages 11–21+)

Instructors: Session 1 will be led by local neurodivergent artist and friend of xMinds Ash Ariel, founder of NeuroNest, LLC

Sessions 2 & 3 will be led by xMinds' own Community Engagement Coordinator Suzanne Minatra, an accomplished artist, printmaker, and educator. Suzanne brings a wealth of artistic expertise, having founded her own letterpress studio (Ordinary Day Press), provided therapeutic art interventions at Cook Children’s Hospital, and spent years teaching youth printmaking and bookmaking.

These classes are free but registration is required to attend. Space is limited!

Election Season in Montgomery County is Heating Up

LEARN WHAT BOARD OF EDUCATION CANDIDATES SAY ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION AND AUTISM SUPPORT

It is election season! Amid announced budget cuts and an overhaul to special education, we will be voting for new representatives for the Montgomery County Board of Education (BOE) --  leaders who will make critical decisions impacting special education.

To ensure our community has clear insight into where the candidates stand, xMinds and the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM) jointly submitted a questionnaire to all BOE candidates. The questionnaire addressed key priorities, including support for discrete autism-specific programs, budget prioritization, and educational equity and access.

Sample Questionnaire Excerpts

  • On Decentralization & Oversight: “If MCPS persists in decentralizing support to neighborhood schools rather than maintaining a centralized team of specialists, what specific oversight measures and reporting requirements will you mandate to ensure equal or better outcomes for autistic students?”

  • On Specialized Programs: “Do you support maintaining discrete, specialized autism programs for students who benefit from them?”

  • On Professional Training & Accountability: “How will you hold MCPS accountable for delivering high-quality training and real-time coaching from specialists to general education teachers, special educators, and paraprofessionals so that autistic students receive the support they need to succeed?”

Candidate Responses

Of the six candidates running, four submitted responses:

  • At Large: Brenda M. Diaz and Omar Lazo

  • District 3: Sally A. McCarthy and Cassandra "Cassi" Sung

You can read their complete, unedited responses directly on the xMinds website.

Note: Candidates Grace Rivera-Oven (District 1) and Elma-Lorraine Diggs (District 5), both running unopposed, did not submit responses although they were invited to complete the questionnaire.

Candidate Forum & Voter Resources

  • LWV Candidate Forum: In the meantime, the League of Women Voters will hold a MoCo BOE candidate forum Wednesday, Oct. 14 (TONIGHT). Find more information about this event HERE.

  • Voter Preparedness: And don't forget: Make sure you check your voter registration here, as well as polling places, early voting locations and ballot drop boxes.

Have a Spooky and Safe Halloween

SENSORY-FRIENDLY TIPS AND LOCAL FAMILY EVENTS

Are your kids already spooked by the Halloween decorations popping up around the neighborhood? Does the thought of traditional trick-or-treating cause you (or them) extra anxiety? You are not alone!

Here are some sensory-friendly tips for a smoother Halloween:

  • Keep it small: Attend a low-key gathering surrounded by familiar faces rather than a large crowd.

  • Set an easy exit plan: Start trick-or-treating in your neighborhood (or a friend’s) but reassure your child that you can head home as soon as they have had enough.

  • Try “Trunk-or-Treats”: These daytime or early-evening events let kids move at their own pace car-to-car in a structured parking lot setting. Below is a curated list of local, family-friendly Halloween activities that may be a fun alternative to traditional trick-or-treating:

Events:

🎃Trunk-or-Treats & Community Gatherings

  • Hallowheaton: Sunday, Oct. 25 | Noon – 4 p.m. at Marian Fryer Town Plaza. Pumpkin painting, s’mores, and a costume contest (2 p.m.).

  • Trunk N' Treat at Geneva Presbyterian Church: Sunday, Oct. 25 | Candy, activities, and neurodiverse-friendly activities presented by Slush N' Krust!

  • Brady Readery (Laytonsville): Saturday, Oct. 31 | 2 p.m. | Storytime, games, and trick-or-treating.

  • Church of Christ Manor Woods (Rockville): Saturday, Oct. 31 | 6:00-8:00 p.m. | Community Trunk-or-Treat.

👻Inclusive Parties & Adaptive Activities

🎭Shows, Music & Cultural Events

  • Planet Word Sensory-Friendly Morning Halloween Edition: Sunday, Oct. 25 | 8:30 - 10 a.m.

  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Olney Theatre Center): Oct. 7 – Nov. 1 | Synetic Theater’s wordless physical adaptation (best for ages 13+).

Looking for a fun alternative to handing out candy? Give out Halloween-themed milkweed seed packets to trick-or-treaters to help save local butterflies!

Bring xMinds Sensory Lounge to Your School

GIVE YOUR STUDENTS A PLACE TO BREATHE

Do you host school events where autistic students feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or left standing on the sidelines? xMinds can help. We’ve created a pop-up sensory lounge that your school or other community organization can bring to your next event!

Bringing a sensory room to your event is easier than ever with xMinds. Our team handles the heavy lifting by managing complete delivery, setup, and teardown, while consulting with you through planning and execution. To help cover our staff time and the ongoing upkeep of our sensory supplies, xMinds requests a modest $250 rental fee (which may vary slightly depending on the scope of your event).

Specific supplies and equipment are tailored based on the age of expected attendees and your available space. Here is a sample of what may be included in a Sensory Lounge:

  • Lighting & Atmosphere: Blackout tents, soothing lamps, twinkly curtain lights, and a portable LED projector

  • Flooring & Seating: Textured rugs, soft foam floor mats, sensory floor tiles, hanging hammock chairs, and beanbags

  • Sensory & Regulation Tools: Noise-canceling headphones, a pop-up ball pit, and plenty of tactile fidget toys

We are incredibly excited about the potential of this program to make Montgomery County school events genuinely inclusive for autistic and neurodivergent students. Any school administration or parent association in MoCo is welcome to inquire about booking our sensory room. Or if you want a consultation on how to design a sensory space of your own, please reach out!

SPEAKER SERIES: IEP 101 WITH COACH WENDY TAYLOR

On September 23, xMinds hosted our monthly Speaker Series webinar, IEP 101, featuring educational therapist and IEP Coach Wendy Taylor, M.Ed., ET/P (owner of Learning Essentials).

Taylor broke down every section of the IEP document, walked through what to expect during the annual IEP meeting, and answered questions directly from parents and caregivers. Whether your child was recently diagnosed or you’re considering a change in placement or services, Taylor demystified the complex acronyms and terminology to help families feel confident and empowered.

If you missed the presentation, you can watch here in English: IEP 101 with Wendy Taylor, M.Ed., ET/P (Learning Essentials)

Monthly Series: Autistic Voices

OPENING DOORS FOR AUTISTIC NONSPEAKERS

Jace Pooley

In this month’s Autistic Voices series, we are highlighting Jace Pooley, a psychology student at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa., and a passionate advocate for nonspeaking individuals. We are featuring Jace’s story in honor of International AAC Awareness Month, celebrated every October to raise awareness about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems-- which include gestures, sign language, picture boards, and speech-generating devices.

In a July 2026 article in Autism Spectrum News, Jace wrote movingly about the fundamental importance of presuming competence in nonspeakers:

“Presuming competence means you give someone the chance to show you their intelligence and empathy and humor because you believe that they are capable in all of those ways. The default expectation is actually that they can think through any demand or question.”

He emphasized practical steps for families and educators: “Presuming competence means doing things like reading literature or school textbooks out loud, holding real conversations that are age appropriate (even if nonspeakers can’t respond), and meaningfully involving nonspeakers in whatever is going on.”

This past August, Jace spoke at the Nature-based Learning Symposium in Rochester, N.Y., sharing insights from hiking 1,433 miles of the Appalachian Trail – from Mount Moosilauke in New Hampshire through Virginia and into Tennessee.

The benefits of hiking in nature “are enormous, especially for autistic children and nonspeakers in particular, many of whom struggle with gross motor movements and motor planning, as well as initiating physical activity,” Jace explained to conference attendees. “Possibly even better than what hiking can mean for motor skills is what hiking can mean for mental health, self-esteem, and confidence!”

This summer, Jace served as a C4A Network Summer Advocacy Intern at Communication 4 ALL, a nonprofit that champions efforts to ensure communication is available to all nonspeakers. Their goal: to build awareness—and action—to ensure that nonspeakers with autism have access to the communication and education essential to living meaningful lives.
