Join other concerned MCPS parents to hear education lawyer Michael Gerton give us the information we’re all wondering about:  What is the status of special education rights during the COVID-19 crisis?  Michael will review and clarify the latest federal, state and local guidance and cover the following topics, with a focus on MCPS: 
  • the continued mandate to provide FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education)
  • provision of supports, accommodations and related services
  • IEP meeting logistics
  • impact on federal timelines
  • compensatory education for delays
  • students funded in non-public placements
  • OAH (due process) and MSDE (state complaint) updates
  • FERPA (student privacy and records), and more

Michael will answer participants’ questions online, but to the extent possible please submit your questions ahead of time with your registration.


Speaker Bio:  Michael's law practice in Rockville focuses on estates and trusts, disability law and education law. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law and the University of Rochester (High Distinction), he has also received a Certificate in Special Education Advocacy from William & Mary Law School. Michael regularly provides representation to clients who have encountered suspensions, expulsions, student conduct violations, academic sanctions and other disciplinary issues from elementary school all the way through postsecondary (college and graduate) settings. He also delivers services related to IEPs, 504 Plans, state and due process complaints, school transfers (e.g. COSA), grade grievances, bullying and Title IX.
