The Art of Portraiture

A Creative Journey for Neurodivergent Teens!

Date: Saturdays, 6 sessions starting March 15th

Time:  10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Location:  Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery - 8th and G Streets NW, Washington, DC 20001

Registration: Required, email Vanessa Jones by Wednesday, February 18th to register.

In this 6-session program, teens will explore the museum’s varied collection from a neurodiversity-informed perspective. Teens will spend time in the galleries and the museum studio exploring topics related to their social lives such as identity, self-presentation, and social conventions through the lens of art and portraiture. The program will culminate in a final group art project.

The program is geared towards autistic/neurodivergent teens between the ages of 14 and 18 with low support needs who enjoy participating in group activities and discussions.

Sessions will take place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to noon. Participants should commit to all six sessions. The group size will be intentionally small to foster a supportive environment.

Please email Vanessa Jones at jonesve@si.edu by Wednesday, February 18th if you have questions or would like to apply.
