We meet twice monthly to answer your questions, help you resolve challenges with your kids and your parenting, and to connect with other parents who "GET IT" — parents of kids with ADHD and/or autism who understand your parenting journey.  We currently plan to host these through May, and will evaluate then whether there is enough interest to warrant continuing.

When you receive SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income), it can be frightening to think about employment. You may have had to work long and hard to get benefits, and don't want to risk losing them.

Luckily, both programs offer safety nets called "work incentives" that help protect your cash benefits, and the medical benefits that come with them, when you go to work.

Learn how work incentives ensure that you can keep essential benefits and come out ahead financially.

Raising Orchids: Practical Strategies for Parents of Neurodiverse Children

Dates: Six consecutive Thursdays, beginning April 22, 12:30 - 1:45 PM.

Parenting a child with developmental, behavioral and/or learning challenges can be incredibly challenging. Besides all the “regular” challenges (bedtimes, schedules, potty training, discipline, tantrums, school), parents of neurodiverse children have a whole other list of concerns: Why is my child so sensitive and hard to parent? What can I do to change challenging behaviors? What therapies does my child need? How do I take care of myself and my other family members when my needy child takes up so much time and energy? How do I nurture my child and understand their differences, while also pushing them to be their best selves?

    Topics addressed include:

    • Understanding difficult behavior
    • Encouraging and empowering your child to learn new skills
    • Supporting your child’s independence and sense of competence
    • Planning for success
    • Troubleshooting difficult situations

Quarterly book club meetings are a chance to connect and reconnect with other parents while exploring a range of topics related to raising children. This quarter, we will discuss Thinking Fast and Slow — Daniel Kahneman, world-famous psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking.

Come ready to discuss what you learned while reading – what you liked, what was useful, and what didn’t make sense. Book club meetings are highly interactive with lots of discussion.

If you want to support Team xMinds, but you don't want to ride a bike -- we're counting on you to join us as a volunteer!

Bike to the Beach is an annual fundraiser where local autism organizations raise money by fielding a team to ride from Union Station in DC to Dewey Beach, DE. That's 100 miles. If that's more that you're up for, lots of team members join at the 50 mile starting line or just for the last 25 miles. You have options!

xMinds has participated in this ride for the last 3 years and it raised about half our annual budget before Covid. This year, to maintain social distance, the organizers have limited the number of bike riders to 100. If you want to ride, join Team xMinds here.

If riding in the hot summer sun for 25, 50 or 100 miles isn't your thing ... we encourage you to join us volunteers!

xMinds volunteers are responsible for creating one great rest stop somewhere along the route. We'll provide snacks, drinks and encouragement for the riders who come through on their way to Dewey Beach.

Here are the different ways you can contribute to our effort as a volunteer:

    • Donate snacks
    • Donate drinks
    • Set up, take down, or staff the rest stop for a few hours on July 30.
    • Create xMinds signs so riders know who is hosting the rest stop

We know you'll have fun staffing the rest stop on Friday, July 30, but if you can't join us, your donations ahead of time will be very much appreciated.

Just sign up now, and we'll meet in the spring (virtually probably) to hear what you would like to do.

    Students can earn SSL hours!

In the past this event has been a lot of fun, and lots of families who participated enjoyed staying over and recovering on the beach the next day.

Join the fun and help make this a successful fundraiser for xMinds!
