It’s a way for individuals to signal to others that they are feeling lonely and isolated and need a friend to play with or someone to talk to. The bench allows others to clearly see when another needs support or a friend, and they can join them on the bench for a chat or invite them to play. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Speakers:  Christine Waanders, Ph.D. and Ashley VanCleef, Esq.

    Cost:  Free

Location:  Online (Register to receive the Zoom link)

Join xMinds and the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM) on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:00 PM for Part 2 of our series on Bullying and Autism.

Psychologist Christine Waanders will provide a framework for understanding bullying and its impact on autistic students who so often become its targets. Parents and caregivers need to take bullying seriously, but they often don’t know what to do to stop it. Some reactions can unintentionally make things worse for their child. Dr. Waanders will provide guidance that enables parents to provide the right support and consequently give your child the best chance to stay safe and to minimize harm to mental health.

Educational Attorney Ashley VanCleef will provide practical advice for parents (and older students) on how to successfully coordinate with your school to develop a safety plan, advocate with your IEP team, and take other legal actions to keep your student safe from bullying.

Don’t miss this important speaker event!

Presentation will be followed by Q&A with the audience.

Join xMinds and the Autism Society of Maryland (AUSOM) on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:00 PM for Part 3 of our series on Bullying and Autism.

Are you concerned about your child's safety in today's digital world? Join us for an eye-opening webinar on cyberbullying with renowned expert, Dr. Chad Rose. He will uncover the unique challenges of monitoring this specific type of bullying and provide practical strategies to protect your child online. With the rise of social media and our increasing reliance on digital communication, it's more important than ever to stay informed and equipped to safeguard your child's well-being.

Chad Rose, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Missouri and the Director of the Mizzou Ed Bully Prevention Lab. His work focuses on the intersection of disabilities, special education, and the bullying dynamic. See his bio below.

BIO:  Special education was not part of Chad Rose's original game plan. He wanted to be a third grade teacher but he ended up accepting a position as a high school special education teacher for the opportunity to coach football. However, it didn't take long before he fell in love with working with students with disabilities. Since then, he has continually expanded his knowledge and skills in working with students with challenging behaviors, eventually earning his doctorate in special education.

Currently he works with schools, educators, and parents across the country, evaluating local anti-bullying policies and training adults in evidence-based practices to reduce bullying among school-aged youth through skills-based interventions.

Professor Rose and his team at the Bully Prevention Lab frequently consult with tech companies to develop strategies to combat cyberbullying online. He is a trusted expert sought after for assistance in making social media platforms safer for children and teens.

Don’t miss this important speaker event!

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

    **Spanish interpretation will be available.**

Vigilancia Virtual: Protegiendo a Estudiantes Autistas del Ciberacoso

    Fecha y hora: Martes, 4 de mayo a las 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

    Orador:  Chad Rose, Ph.D.

    Costo: Gratis
