Anxiety is the most common mental health concern among children and teens, and it is not something they outgrow. Indeed, most mental health problems in adulthood begin in childhood and adolescence as anxiety. Perhaps this has never been truer than it is now, two years into a wholly disruptive and traumatic global pandemic.

Early intervention is essential to minimize later problems with depression and other social, emotional, behavioral, academic, and health difficulties. Unfortunately, most children go without effective support until adolescence, when they are extremely susceptible for developing severe anxiety disorders. Without a full understanding of anxiety in children and the manifestations of its symptoms, we can easily miss when anxiety shows up.

Thankfully, with the right knowledge and tools, anxiety is highly treatable. This webinar is vital for anyone with, or working with, anxious children and teens.

In this webinar, you will learn:

    • The nature of anxiety and how it shows up in children
    • How to differentiate normal worries from anxiety
    • Stressors that contribute to anxiety in children and teens with ADHD
    • Common traps parents, teachers, and other mental health professionals fall into
    • How some strategies may unwittingly worsen kids’ worries and associated behaviors
    • Key skills needed to successfully manage anxiety while promoting courage, confidence, and resilience

    ESPAÑOL

Join xMinds on May 24 at 7:00 PM for a panel discussion exploring the experiences of three millennial, autistic self-advocates who will discuss their social lives, past and present.

Panelists will discuss what supports have been helpful, and what well-intentioned supports may have been harmful.  They will tell us what their ideal social engagements look like, and how their goals may not always mirror what their parents had envisioned for them.

Panel discussion will be followed by Q&A with the audience.

    Cost:  Free

Location:  Online (Register to receive the Zoom link)

    Meet our Panelists:

Joel Carver                           Heather Weiss                         Justin Valenti.

Joel Carver is a 2017 graduate from the College of William and Mary and an autistic self-advocate for 8 years.  He was a co-founder of the Student Neurodiversity Group, a published writer, and a public speaker.

Heather Weiss (33) attended MCPS from preschool through high school. She received her Associates degree in fine arts from Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida in 2010 while participating in a program that provided tutoring and mentoring. After graduating, Heather worked with a job coach and then Project SEARCH to gain experience in a series of paid internships and part-time jobs at the Kennedy Center, T. J. Maxx, and the Smithsonian. Her part-time position with Smithsonian Archives as an Archives Aide became a full-time job in January 2021.

Heather has lived in Main Street Apartments in Rockville since October, 2020 and attends many programs through Main Street Connect. In her spare time, Heather loves creating art projects, listening to and dancing to music, reading, watching YouTube and loves to travel.

Justin Valenti is an author, self advocate, and artist who graduated from Quince Orchard High School in 2014. Since graduation, Justin has taken classes at Montgomery County Community College. Justin is also a board member for The Arc Maryland and he works at the National Institute of Health as an Office Clerk. In his free time, Justin likes to create artwork, play the drums, and read books. Justin has many years of experience with public speaking and he is always willing to share his experiences with other people.

Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.

This presentation serves as an overview of the different skills and/or steps neurodiverse individuals might experience regarding self-discovery, job-readiness, job-seeking, and job-keeping. Nancy Frasche will talk about how to explore different journeys with the individual's choice, interest, and ability in mind.

Nancy Frasche, a Montgomery County Maryland native, has over 20 years of experience working with individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. Her passion for the special needs community was ignited by her brother, who has Autism and is currently supported by a local adult service program. After graduating from Elon University with degrees in Special and Elementary Education, Nancy began her career at the Ivymount School, a non-public school in Rockville, MD that teaches individuals with learning differences. Within Ivymount, Nancy worked as a 1:1 aide in the Autism Program, a Job Coach, and eventually rose to the level of Employment Coordinator for the Post High School Program, where she managed a team of Job Coaches and was responsible for building work partnerships with businesses within the community. In 2013, Nancy received a Master's Certificate in Transition and Rehabilitation Services, as well as her Certified Employment Support Professional credential. In 2017, Nancy founded and began running the Job Readiness Program at Madison Fields, a person-centered program that provides work experience opportunities for individuals with different abilities. Nancy also maintains a portfolio of private clients and works to develop their community, vocational, and independent living skills. On the weekends, she helps run a recreational horseback riding program for individuals with learning differences.

Parenting a child with developmental, behavioral and/or learning differences can be incredibly challenging. Besides all the “regular” challenges (bedtimes, schedules, potty training, discipline, tantrums, school), parents of highly sensitive children have a whole other list of concerns: Why is my child so sensitive and hard to parent? What can I do to change challenging behaviors? What therapies does my child need? How do I take care of myself and my other family members when my needy child takes up so much time and energy? How do I nurture my child and understand their differences, while also pushing them to be their best selves?
